  1. Yeah, It sucks that your getting rid of the pathy! But then again Rangers aren't TERRIBLE persay, just not anyones first choice. Lovebunny made the same switch and he hasn't been complaining -- and my buddy with a 93 ranger has no complaints. To bad the fronteir isn't offered in right-hand drive for ya though -- probably would have been the better buy in the long run.
  2. Don't you remember the WD21's don't have headlight relays? I'd check for a fuse or shorted wire though -- I know the HB's didn't work in my 87 when I did the rewire -- it ended up being a blown fuse to the PS headlight.
  3. We do -- its stickied at the top of general forums. From 88 Word
  4. Yeah the joint still flexes a reasonable amount, but it sounds like a rock tumbler when doing so. Theres so much dirt in the joint, and not a lot of grease. There is some play in the joint, and it does kinda "pop" -- especially compared to the diff-side joint, which was reasonably smooth & quiet. I'm just going to throw a new one on though, just so I can feel a confident about that side again. How do you rebuild these things though? The DS boots are starting to crack, and I might as well replace those while this is all on my mind. Thanks for the help guys
  5. It is FUBARED for sure -- You can hear grinding noises when moving the lower part of the joint. I went ahead and cut off the remaining part of the boot just to get a better pic of it. Never mind the grass -- the driveway I'm doing this in leads up to my back yard. I'll post up when I get a new axel installed to see if this fixed the outrageous steering wobble problem.
  6. Tried that -- still no dice. Now the whole flange IS supposed to turn right? CW or CCW?
  7. Can anyone tell me the easiest way to rotate the diff flange? I've removed 4 of the 6 12 sided bolts, but untill I rotate the flange I can't access the last two. I've got the tranny in N and the TC in 4HI -- do I need to change this? Do I need to go pick up a strap wrench? thanks guys -- so far so good with this I guess -- only one bloody knucle too! (thank jeebus for gloves!)
  8. I would assume its to keep the install as clean as possible. But if you've got wire sitting around, I could use some :-) Sent you a pm
  9. I remember that post -- I think the problem is our air cleaners are really thin, and without some advanced welding its pretty hard to make watertight. So hard, but not impossible.
  10. Actually our engines get as much out of a snorkel as the 90+ models, its just harder to seal up, due to us having an older style air cleaner on top of the engine, as opposed to the air box on the newer models.
  11. I've had it ripped down to the weird panel behind the face plate before -- it just wasn't real obvious where the bulb was. Maybe i wasn't looking hard enough. Do we know what type of bulb this takes?
  12. My truck might need to be supported for awhile while I get some things taken care of with the CV joint and steering. I can only do it in a gravel area beside my house, since the pathy won't fit in the garage, and my cement driveway is an incline. Not to mention the gravel area is gated off from the street, so I can avoid looking like the neighborhood redneck if my trucks going to be down for awhile. How can I do this safely? I have some pieces of 1/2 ply I was thinking of putting under the stands, but thought I'd ask here first.
  13. I know what your talking about, I'm just not sure where the bulb is, or even how to replace it. I was in there last week but had other things on my mind at the time.
  14. LOL -- I thought about removing all of that mess when I was rewiring my toolbox. You've made me glad I didn't Congrats on getting it fixed though Not to thread jack -- but are these controls supposed to be illuminated? Mine aren't and its driving me nuts.
  15. The wattage of the lights is really going to define how you do this, as you want to make sure you don't draw more amps than your standard relay can handle safely. If it was me I'd have it coming off of two relays wired to one switch. One relay per side, run one thick gauged wire to the three lights, ground them to the frame, wrap/protect your wiring, copy to the other side, and call it good.
  16. Vsicks: Wow Dude -- Think you overreacted a bit? It may not all be sound advice, but they're just trying to help. -thnkboutit- I'll give this one to you, your probably right, my truck wandered more than a senile goat even before I noticed the mutilated boot. Even so I think its obvious the CV needs attention, and I don't think its a bad place to start. Could I ask you to be a little less dark and ominous and tell me what you really think is knackered?
  17. I'm going to take a stab in the dark here and say I need a new axle. Half of the boot is missing, and god only knows for how long. I'm going to start tracking down a new axel, snap ring pliers and some help tomorrow.
  18. I'm thinking about just replacing the whole axel like you said. I can get a re-man'd one @ napa for $93 w/core. Would it be worth it to look for these @ the local wreckers? Or is it better to get guaranteed parts for a job like this? I'm planning on doing it myself -- but it depends on how much beer & pizza it takes to get my Saab mech. Buddy to help out Especially since this doesn't sound like an shade-tree mech/easy job. Is it recommended to do both sides at the same time? Even with the DS not showing any obvious damage? Also -- would it be worth it to swap out anything else while I'm in there?
  19. I'm not sure what to think honestly -- you guys are the guru's not me I'm just trying to fix whatevers wrong and learn something along the way. Plus I already know my steering parts aren't in the best shape ever, (hey, the truck cost $450) but it did get noticbly worse when 4wd was engaged -- and I didn't have this problem on tuesday when I went up last.
  20. So can anyone give me a snyopsis of the tools needed to do this? EG, do I need to pick up a torque wrench? Snap ring pliers? An air gun? Strap wrench? (wtf is a strap wrench anyway?), pullers of any sort? etc?
  21. So I was driving the twisty road to the ski hill today. I got high enough (heh) into the snow pack and put it into 4HI. Shortly after that I noticed my steering wheel was wandering more than usual, even when travling in a straight line. Rolled down the PS window and I could here a "thwack" sound every few seconds. I put it back into 2wd then and things seemed to go back to normal. Got to the parking lot and took a peek at the undercarriage. Sure enough the PS boot where the axel meets the diff is nearly gone. The DS looked fine. So at the very least I'm looking at replacing a boot, if not much much more. Any ideas on how much more, or how difficult this is going to be to fix?
  22. Cute dogs Quismo! Any advice for a prospective Beagle owner? Good for you and yours Ticker!
  23. 87 SE 4x4 AT 3.0 -- 268,000 miles, Originial Engine/Tranny Lets see here (this should be a LONG List) Shocks are shot (might even be the OEM ones ) Weather Stripping needs replaced all the way around. Truck doesn't seal worth crap. Drivers door lock needs some TLC -- rough to open/doesn't always unlock other doors. Drivers window needs TLC -- won't roll down (power windows) Bumper/Grill guard sit crooked because the right bumper mount bolt broke. Mainifold Tick Exhaust Leak / Exhaust full of rust holes 02 sensor probably needs replaced Some rust under the rear seats. God knows where else too HVAC Controls don't light up. Center portion of the gauge cluster doesn't light up. One KC light needs a new H3 bulb. In dire need of a Tune Up/Tranny Flush/Coolant Flush 4x4 Icon doesn't light up when in 4wheel drive. Steering wheel has finger grooves/insulation exposed from the PO's use. Various broken plastic tabs CB's fried -- going to replace with new one -- get a firestik too! Both rear hatch & rear glass supports are FUBARed Front end (BJ's, TRE's, CL, Idler arm etc) need looked at, probably replaced. Blower motor vibrates uncontrollably on any setting above 3. Amended as of late: PS CV Axel needs replaced BAD -- DONE TODAY! WOOO! All in all its probably pretty standard stuff for a truck nearly 20 years old, and purchased for $450 And after reading through this thread, maybe we should organize a group buy on those hatch supports
  24. I've got a 29 gallon tank/hood out in the garage -- I want to set it up, but not sure what to put in it and I still have to build a stand for it. It used to house a assortment of frogs/newts/fish & a crab though. Terrariums are fun. -bounce- Speaking of pets -- check out this poor pup Dog caught in elevator.
  25. Ok ok I admit I knew the dog thread was out there -- but thought there was no love for the cats!
