  1. I don't know what car they were talking about, but stranger things can and do happen.

All 4wds risk breakages if a fast spinning wheel suddenly finds traction. Especially the on the front. More so for an IFS car than a live axle car, but the risk is still there. A locker in the front is preferred by pro drivers if only a single locker is going to be used (we have flogged this topic to death in the past so look it up). It makes sense (to me) that a locker in the front will help prevent the front wheels from spinning at different speeds and thus sh!tting themselves when traction is found. The new fad here is to put LSD in the front. It helps with traction not to the same extent as a locker but a LSD will not bind while turning, thus allowing you to steer. A LSD will also let go well before a CV breaking point is reached if it is set up correctly.

  2. Back to the steering talk. I told my dad about L&P's steering upgrades and he suggested why not just find a full size truck tie rod set that is a little bigger and beefier than the stock nissan stuff and then take the centerlink and drill out the hole to fit the full size truck tie rods. Ans then take the idler and pitman arms off and fab up some kind of U shaped metal piece to wrap around them and weld it up. That way you would have strengthened up the arms and would have tie rods that are strong enough for a fullsize truck which should handle 33's.

Or since there is soo much after market stuff for certain trucks you could buy a set of after market tie rods that you would normally put on a lifted truck. Using those guessing that they would be stronger then stock it would beef up the pathy steering even more.

This all said. I just can't get over how L&P can charge 300+ just for putting hevier duty ball joints in the centerlink. Modifing it at home and buying off the shelf tie rods from a full size truck would be cheaper if you go with an american truck and you could probably do this all with a drill press and hand drill. I still have my old centerlink from when I replaced my steering with stock stuff before so I'm going to try it out on that and see how it works.

If anyone actually reads this whole thing let me know if this has been done before and if it worked or if it hasn't been done then if you think it would work.

    Thanks

No, I have not heard of anyone doing what you suggest. That is not to say that it can not be done if you engineer everything correctly. Sounds like it will take a while and a fair amout of $ though.

You have not said how you will incorperate any of this to the Nissan stub axle assembley. Are you suggesting a one peice drag link like a truck uses? If so that will not work with the IFS front end. Car and truck parts, in general, do not mix! If you are only talking about larger TRE's then you will have to make a new drag link altogether otherwise you risk the wheels pointing out and no room to turn them in. Then you will have to be able to get an idler arm and tha pitman arm to somehow fit also. Then you have to find someone to enlarge and retaper the recieving holes for the ball joints on the stub axles, idler and pitman arm. Thats if you are going to be left with enough steel to do that that is. By the way, the pitman arm on the Pathfinders are fine, they are as strong as nails. :aok:

Sounds like a good project if you can get over a few hurdles. I wonder why SLR and Calmini etc. never thought of doing it that way?

Good luck and let us know what you plan to do.

  3. One more thing. My dad also suggested to buy a jeep wrangler that is already all tricked out and then put my pathfinder almost back to stock for my daily driver. There is a jeep wrangler in my local auto trader that has a 427 hemi in it. It advertises being the fastest jeep in Minnesota. sweet.

All well and good to have the fastest if you want to race it I suppose. Other than that, the point would be what?

  4. It sucks the everloving life out of the engine and it wrecks steering parts faster than you can whip out your wallet, but it's been done.

A donk with power will handle the 35's no problem. In fact, 35's will actually put a Pathy in the standard range on fuel consumption. But his front end....... I agree with you 88. Money wasted if you plan to go off road.

  5. What can I say. Finally, it is easier to do something to a Pathy in Australia than in the USA. I never thought I'd see the day. I am talking about a live axle, and coiled to boot. :takebow:

That aside, I am more interested in the engine swap side of this thread. Having swapped my 2.4ltr for a 3.8ltr, I may be able to give you some tips. My Pathy too has 4.625:1 ratios. There are actually 3 different diff ratios for the Pathy. 4.3x, 4.6x and 4.8x. This info might enable you to match a little more closely? The 4cyl Pathy and the 6cyl Pathy share the same ratios and box match ups regardless of 4cyl or 6.. When I fitted my 3.8ltr I lost the need to use first gear. Keep in mind I was still running stock 30" tyres. The difference in the torque of the two motors made first gear hit max rpm after about 1 second.

I have since put 33's on and it is a lot better. However, to achieve a proper aspect ratio, I will have to get 34's or 35's. The Pathy is notorious for poor fuel consumption. This is because it is underpowered and it is gearing is up the creek. This chart explains what I am talking about. Nissan had to wrongly gear Pathies because the engines they used are too gutless to pull a correct aspect ratio.

So, if you are going to swap the engine for something with more ponies, don’t bother changing ratios etc. just upsize your tyres.

  6. Looks like a nice Pathy, and he spared no expense. Still, you can't help but wonder.... how many minutes would the front end last on a medium to tough 4wd track? I'd guess 5.

Is anyone else thinking that a sas would have been around the same price and a little more pertinent? Anyone??

  7. It was a rude question I know, but it had to be asked.

All the power to him for having the time and money for such an undertaking, not forgetting the skill that will be involved.

Funny, I didn't see "sas" in his work to do list though. If you are going to spend up large, then a sas is a must have item.

I will be interested to see how it looks after it has been finished, and then in a years time to see if any of the rust has resurfaced. I hope the latter isn't the case.

  8. See the thing about my truck is that im not fixing the rust... im completely replacing the panels. Fenders are all coming out... the inner fenders/fireguard/gap plats... inner skirts dunno what to call em anymore lmao are all coming in brand new now... I bought them all for front and back. I got custom rocker panels made, got new front fenders, new front and back bumpers, my frame is being sand blasted and reconditioned. My flooring is going to be steel with ZRC coat ontop of it....

My truck is not being fixed, its being overhauled like that show. I rebuilt my engine with my friend thats a mechanic. I sanded all the rust in the engine pay and used heat resistent spraypaint to fix it all. Everything is coming along nicely

I want to install rhino matt instead of carpet but i cant seem to find out where I can get my hands on it or something similar...

Good luck to you then. :aok: But even on "pimp my ride" they have put cars to rest.

May I ask what the cost of the makeover is going to be?

  9. Man, you are very ambitious. The rust in your firewall to engine bay (what you are calling the inner guard?) would have turned me off straight away. There doesn’t seem to be any surface area there that you could weld new metal too. The other pics of the car and all of the rust would have seen me tossing it down the tip (you call it a dump) as a lost cause.

Are you sure that restoring ‘that’ Pathfinder is going to be economically viable? Rust is very hard to get rid of unless you cut it out, and even then, it will still come back unless done properly. Seeing where, and the amount of rust that you have, I have my doubts that you will get rid of it, even for a short period of time. And anything you try is only going to be in vein.

I am not knocking you for attempting to bring that Pathy back to life, far from it. I would just hate to see you throw good money and time after bad. Let it P.I.P.

  10. My Driver's side low-beam does not work. I replaced the bulb, and the low-beam still does not work. I tried a couple more bulbs I had, and still the low-beam doesn't work.. The highbeam and running lights work though.... I found the two 'fuses' or whatever (for the left and right headlight) under the hood in the black box closest to the front of the engine. I pulled them out placed the one from the bulb that works into the non-workign side... Same problem. So it can't be the fuse or the bulb. That leaves, the wiring?

What should I do? Is there another fuse/module I need to be checking?

    2002 Pathfinder Chilkoot

    You have a PM.

If you follow what I said, you will never have this sort of issue with your lights ever again.

PM me on how you went with it.

  11. NPORA=Nissan Pathfinder Off-Road Association

This is getting Pathetic already P...

If all you have to say is about WaR (or related) then maybe, No not maybe You Are in the wrong Forum! I to am getting pretty sick of coming here to see 1 man's hate for a few countries.

I know the reason to inform, but really that's a load of Bull because we all know and if we don't what happens in War then we wouldn't be looking on here to find out.

I'll try to look for a Forum that you and others can talk about constantly on how bad everyone is. This should make you happy. It can be your way of release

I'll look for a political BB for you.

This should make you happy and maybe you can try to talk about some wheeling or something at NPORA.

Here you can discuss all you want and you can revel in thinking that you've bested someone who cares  or shares your thoughts.

Vsicks Politics Discussions - Your Welcome

    I hope that helps :aok:

Sorry, didn't see your post and it is a little late. I already talk politicts and topical matters of the day in other forums.

Your lack of understanding of issues and topics that are 'world news' worthy is outstanding. Hate is a very big word and you should at least have an idea as to how to use it. It stands to reason that you use it on my behalf in the wrong context. It just goes to show how narrow minded and short sited some people are.

  12. Old, the story was published only yesterday.

And I too wish it would all end. Perhaps next month might be the one that shuts us all up, and for ever too? We can't have Iran trading oil in Euros now can we?

Sorry the news wasn't more thought provoking or to your liking. I also hope it didn't leave a bitter taste in your mouth. It is not even a Yank topic?? You don't find it strange that the news media do not report on such things or anything much at all that is war related? Why worry about the illegal activities? Do you know how many innocent allied soldiers (99% of casualties are your countrymen) have been killed, lost their minds or have been maimed to date? I could post that up but I doubt that most could give a rats arse as to how many are dead or have had their lives ruined, letalone know the number. Best not to talk about such things, isn't it? Perhaps if you ignor it long enough it will go away. Sorry to bust your bubble. Ignoring the problem only makes it worse or haven't you noticed?

I have tried to find something positive, something good, anything to quench the bloodthirsty that think this illegal war and the putrid crimes committed is a joke and a glorious thing, something to behold and to be proud of but I have not been able to find anything. Seems no one else has been able to do that either. How odd that no one seemed percipient to that fact?

I wish I could be a mushroom too Steve. Unfortunately I have got two kids that have to live in this world, and be buggered if I will stick my head up my bum like it's all roses. I'd rather try to do something about it. Ignorance only compounds the arrogance.

I can live with propaganda no problem at all but the facts scare the sh!t out of me, though not as much as the people that condone or ignore what is happening.

There is obviously no value in informing anyone here as to what actually happens in this world. I forget you guys get Fox...... You see the childish comments like "Geez, ask me if I care", that type of thing smacks of ignorance and arrogance and is truely reprehensible. Add to that the blatant lies posted up by some and you do come to realise why people have staunch opinions and a lack of forbearance about others in other countries. Why some of these people even bother to reply is a question I don't even think they can give an honest answer to. *A Mark Twain or a Pezzy quote needed here.*

You may or may not have gathered that this is my last post here too. Might stop back just to look in from time to time but not to post, I honestly can't see the point in posting in any area here. If you know too much mechanically you have to put up with the same childish diatribe. It was a pleasure meeting most of you, and I wish you well.

At least you got something out of the topical postings sammy. -study- :aok: And you were bang on the money. They could not put up anything to save their lives.

Knowledge is a good thing, you can never learn too much. Read, read and read some more.

Steve, PCoA might be back up and running by now, might see you there.

    NOT! :P

  13. This is all great comming from the UN and EU, who would have nothing to do with the war in the first place and now see it fit to "request" it closed down.

By that you are saying that the war is illegal. -thnkboutit-

Down a few more duffs and it might become a little more clear for you. :asleep:
