  1. Plus another question, it looks like its in two parts, the soft vinyl on top that ajoins the plastic underneath. I cant for the life of my seperate the two (do they?)

    Thanks  :)

So you must have read what I said about this very thing just two posts earlier.

Do not remove any screws that are covered by the metal trim just the 10mm bolts.
  2. Well I successfully removed all my dash and its actually very easy to do.

So if anyone needs a hand you can message me B)

But I still didnt eliminate that bloody rattle/squeak!!!!!!!

My whole 2 days of work basically useless. So i've decided its not in the interior but maybe under that panel above the bonnet, like a windscreen wiper motor lose or something.

I must say, removing and installing the dash using thick double sided tape on the mounting points did eliminate alot of smaller rattles and knocks

The squeek is more than likely from broken spot welds. They can be hard to find.

  3. :nono: I wasn't saying it's cool to run offroad, just that normal road driving won't cause too many issues as it is now. Timebomb refferance was meaning that the steering won't just fall to pieces all of a sudden.

Put that way, fair enough. I agree, if he is to maintain the status quo he shouldn't have much of a problem. No going off road or using 4wd until it is fixed.

  4. You will notice worn steering components even more in 4wd and they will fail very quickly without much effort at all if you are off road.

What GG said is correct. The longer you leave it, the quicker the other steering components will go. This is where I move from GG's thinking..... It can be a timebomb! especially if you take your Pathy off road on occasion. The tie rods and idler arm bushes are next to follow and once they go, you will run the risk of the car going places you don't want to. It will be fine on a smooth straight section of road untill an undulation or a bend. It can be scarey stuff as a few here on this board can attest to, including myself.

  5. How far east are you Matt? The guy that broke his CV joint on Sundays trip was from Mt Evelyn.

A mate and I will be organising a weekend trip (camping and 4wding) soon. It will not be too hard because the poor bugger has a hilux (ifs) and in stock form, as his is, they don't get into the medium too well, letalone hard places. Your pathy should not break on one of these type trips. So if you're interested, we could hook up.

  6. G'day guys, Well I got myself a 96 pathy earlier this week and have been looking around for parts. ARB (Anti R50 Brand) have bearly anything for R50's. Looking around the net I see that TJM have bull bars for the R50 in the states but not here in Oz even though they are made here.

Another mob over in Perth (I think anyway) make them but I can not recall their name at the moment. I will pm you when I remember.

  7. You got half of the forest laying in those ruts.

Loose the rear sway bar and you will be suprised how much articulation you get out of the arse end. And pictures never do justice to a track  so you're not alone on that point.

I am in Bundoora, just north of Melbourne.

    Welcome.

  8. Thanks!  I wasn't too concerned about the appearance when I made it, I was more concerned with usefulness.  Last year I hydro locked a motor while going through a routine mudhole and vowed to never let that happen again.  Cost me big time to replace the motor.  That snorkle is just an insurance policy and it has put me at ease alot of times, I no longer worry about splashing around anywhere.  Pics are here from when it was hydro locked, pathetic little puddle.  Notice the truck was 100% stock then.

Your kidding? You swallowed water from that little tiny puddle? You couldn't have thrown up much water, it is too shallow. Not as much as this anyway...

  9. Not sure where I personally attacked you, but I apologize if you felt I had.

Your post was edited so the mods thought so too but all is well on this side of the pond. I did not have any lasting issues with anything thing that was said. It's all good fun... untill someone gets hurt that is. :(:aok:

  10. Was the engine ratteling or running rough before the gasket blew? If not, I think the chain is fine and the motor mechanic might have been fishing for some extra cash.

The chain can be checked for play when the rocker cover comes off. It is highly unusual for a chain to stretch on the Z24.

  11. Wow, I really dislike the direction this thread took.  Not the spirit of this board at all.

    For the record:

    - I stand by my original post.

    - Momentarily binding was not meant to mean fully seized - I meant dragging severely - a high friction situation.  Binding was not the ideal word to use.  Sorry.

    - The degrees on the wall indicate I didn't fail physics.

    - I refuse to join in 4 year old name calling and hysterics.  I encourage others to do the same.

I look forward to hearing what Harb reports after the repair.

Yeah, I was quite shocked to see such a personal attacks from you and tbecktold.

NO, I should not have retaliated but with such things being said... well I did and I was biting my tounge all the way! YES, I should have left it to the mods to take care of. As it stands, I just made a lot more work for mz.... Sorry mz, it will not happen again. He had to go back and mod all of our posts and that is hardly fair on him. We should be ashamed of ourselves.

    That being said......

Binding and seized are two different things. I never suggested you said they were the same. For the cv to bind, it has to be at a very acute angle, and then will completely lock up the wheel rendering the car unsteerable untill that huge bang occurs to let you know it is free again. Seizing will cause massive friction and could even start a fire (uless it is the diff that seized). Both will cause the car to be pulled in the direction of the effected side. As nothing of this nature was made apparent in the original post, it stood to reason his problem with wandering is caused by worn steering components. He can quickly check this by leaving his hubs locked in and not engaging 4wd. His using 4wd has exaggerate the effect of worn components. As the front driving wheels try to put power to the ground. The following happens...... under load, his wheels will turn in toward each other. When he eases off the power his wheels try to turn away from each other. It is a very common problem with pathfinders and causes them to wander. The more worn the components are the more severe the wandering. There are litteraly hundreds of threads on this. I hope this can explain more clearly where I was coming from and it is not to idiotic for you.

NAME CALLING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!!!

i heavily edited some posts because of that.. got the idea? now, quit it and play nice. think FAMILY FRIENDLY! at all times.

    thanks P...

P.S. neither will i tolerate any baiting. all those with my edits, consider yourselves warned! i don't want to pursue any further actions (read-more drastic) in this matter.

    Big edit.

  13. OH I know there is still plenty to do to it. But, gotta crawl before walking and it takes time and money. I don't have a write up but here are some pics of when I made the snorkel.

    http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/treyscool1/a...cool1/my_photos

    True, very true.

I have changed my mind about your snorkel too. I said geordies was better. His choice of material leaves you for dead but having looked at the last link, your install is cleaner, tidier, well better (in my opinion of course). Get rid of that ugly top hat though.

  14. ooh oooh, time for my irrational outburst

*************** Yes, people are trying to learn stuff here.  I've never done anything with my CVs, other than make sure the boots aren't bad, and while I'm trying to learn something from Harby's thread here, you come up with some off the wall bullcrap, polluting the thread.  While you are on hiatus, please consider your actions on this board, as we hope you come back  ****************

Let us for once concider what would happen if your axle was stuffed.

    1. Stuffed axle.. the car would not pull and nor would it wander.

    2. If binding, as was suggested........... you would slide off the road, the car would pull drastically to the effected side. After all one wheel has locked up!

    3. If two was really happening...... you would have to stop any momentum asap, lest you would have already crashed on an icy/snowy road!!!!!.

    4. A seized bearing...... the effected wheel would overheat and perhaps catch fire. Pulling drastically once again to the effected side.

    5. a damaged axle or cv joint does not effect steering at all. It can not make the car wander. It may vibrate and that's it!

    6. What steers the car? -thnkboutit- -thnkboutit- -thnkboutit- -thnkboutit-

************ people want to learn things here,***********

I Got to the point 88.

  15. Turn your headlights on then try to start the car. If the lights go very very dim then your battery is stuffed. It is the best way to check battery life without a tester. If the lights stay bright, look for a faulty Earth or as others have said, new starter time.
