  1. Most places in the US have no statutes or limitations on rollbars or cages with regard to seatbelt or harness anchoring points, as far as I know. The only way anyone around here would ever get in trouble for something like that is if they modified the harness or seatbelt in such a way that made it weaker than it would have been if the original anchoring points had been left alone or was done in an unsafe or negligent way, and even then it would probably just be a ticket/citation.

We don't have vehicle inspections, emissions or anything extra whatsoever where I live. I can pretty much register, license and drive any vehicle that I can run long enough to drive it in so they can verify the VIN number for the paperwork.

A harness will hold you true in your seat if fitted correctly.

Now think about the roof caving in on top of you and not being able to lay across the seats.

I think we get the idea.

  2. You are using 4WD on a hard traction surface. Your car is "binding". Keep doing it and in no time at all you will distroy your diff, cv's, transfer case or gear box. I am supprised it hasn't gone bang yet. Just as well Nissan over engineered their drive components isn't it? You will have shortend the life of your car now anyway.

4WD is only ever to be used when traction is a problem.

  3. It was the first (well second technically) snow of the year here in Vancouver, and it was actually staying on the ground this time. SWEET, Time to get my snow legs, do some donuts, practise starting, stoping, turning etc. I always do it when it first snows, it keeps me aware of how badly my vehicle handles in the snow. My dad has always told me its good to do this, and Its saved me a few times... hehe plus its really fun! Anyways, theres almost an inch of snow on the ground and I figure I'll find a nice quiet parking lot to goof around in. After a short 5 minute drive I find a well lit, abandoned parking lot and start doing my thing. Wouldn't you know it, a cop pulls up to me and tells me to get out of my car, yadda yadda yadda, you know the rest. He gave me a REALLY hard time and ended up only giving me a warning after I kissed his ass for 10 minutes straight. Seriously.. WTF!? Where I grew up, the MOST a cop would EVER do in this situation, is come up to you and say "you're on private property, go wreck your car somewhere else" or just plain "get out of here". .... ugh... living in this city is really getting to me, you can barely find anywhere to be away from people, they put an inch of salt on the roads for an incoming half inch of snow, and people leave work 3 hours early cause its going theres going to be a "snow storm". lol 4 cm's of snow that doesn't stick IS NOT a snow storm!

Anyone else have similar occurances before? surely the cops in the more rural areas have never razzed you for something this harmless.

You and your old man have it right. Practice makes perfect. That copper should have praised you for taking the time and effort to get to know your cars ability in snowy and icy conditions.

You should have posed the question to him.... Better here than under atruck somewhere because I was not prepared?

You did the right thing by sucking up his arse. No fine for you is still a victory.

  4. Considering this, you could probably make some custom mounting brackets for it to fit your rig. IMHO, with some fabrication you can make any push-bar mount to your rig.

    Good luck

The r50 was out (here) in '95.

If the front is the same then of course it will bolt straight up, no modification needed.

  5. Hi All

I read a local ad for a 'Bush' bumper from an 87 Pathy. Yup it's cheap. Yet I wonder if it is possible?

How far apart are the front bumper mounts for an 87 Pathy to a 95 Pathy?

Is the width of the front end of the body on an 87 even close to what the 95 is?

Any info would be more than welcome. Thanks

Give that the front ends are totally different, what would you think?

  6. Yes, it is, obviously, but it is not terribly... My thoughts are to SAS it, and align the front axle to the rear, who cares if it sits slightly skewed.

Have the frame measured relative to the rear, get an idea of there the hangers need to go relative to current frame horns, cut and weld away, put in the leafs and axle and have it aligned to the rear. I'm new to this, but I think that pretty much covers it. Isn't that a benefit to leafs and solid axle, that they are somewhat adjustable ? What am I missing ?

    B

I would go for coils. At least you can pack them and you would not have the extra work trying to square up the front.

  7. Actually, I think you are wrong about that V6... All I need to do is get a solid axle in it straight (leafs would help 'cause you can adjust the shackles somewhat) and it would be ready for action. But yes, I have considered swapping. Problem is there are virtually NO dead pathys here in Cali and I have no place to to tackle a project like that now.

As for how to do it, just run your truck into a cement barrier on a dark and rainy winter morning. It's easy, I'm sure you could do it !! ;)

    B

LOL B. Yes I could do it and it would not have to be dark and wet for it to happen. Pissed yes, but not dark and wet.

I just worry that your whole chassis is out of square B. Even if you go the live axle option, your car may well track sideways (crab walk) and still handle like sh!t.

  8. 'Bout bloody time you posted them up.

B, your pathy is a write off, finished, never to traverse another trail. Find another Pahty, one with sh!t running gear and sawp the good stuff for the bad. If it moved like that then nothing will ever line up.

I am ignorant as to how you did such a fine job at distroying something and hiding it from view at the same time. Please fill me in.

  9. i still havent got my manual back from a friend so here goes

    need torque figures for:

    -tie rod end to hub

    -tie rod end to cl

    -cl to idler arm

    -cl to pitman arm

    thanks

Just tighten them up till it feels right, then move the castle nuts back or forth till the holes line up. You don't need to torque them Steve.

  10. Never been involved in one however I have heard this advice given many times:

Wear your seatbelt, or even better a harness. Keep your hands arms legs etc inside the vehicle. Don't try to bail out. Make sure all your stuff is secured somehow (bungie cords rope etc). If you have a roll bar don't grab it except for specific grab bars (don't wanna smash your hand do you?).

Finally pray! (or whatever ritual you feel is appropriate)

DO NOT wear a harness unless your car has an approved roll cage.

  11. Both are automatics, thats why I'm thinking it might be a bolt in.

I thought about swapping bodies but seems like even more work and alot of wires to contend with.

I would have one week max from start to finish to do the job.

The quickest way to make the 2wd a 4wd is to swap the bodies over. The next quickest would be to put in a live axle. If you have the $$$$, then do that and use all the good gear from the other pathy or vise versa.

Don't stress about the wiring. The wiring looms are all fitted with connectors. Just unplug them. For the wires that you may become concerned about, use masking tape to lable them. Just make sure you get them all. Places like the transfer case, gear box and fuel tank are out of site so double check everything is disconnected before you remove the body.

About 10 strong men to lift the bodies off and on and you're done. You can even do a body lift while you are at it. :takebow:

You say you have a week, I think if you organise yourself you can have a 4wd Pathy in a weekend by swapping the bodies, EASY! And a bonus........ without a body on, the running gear will be very very easy to get to and swap over. Think about it.

EDIT: Good luck and plenty of pics.

  12. Since we're on the subject of Gear Ratio's, I have a question.  Now as you probably have figured out by now I know next to nothing about the mechanics of a vehicle.  I'm learning as fast as I can but of course its a slow learning curve.  Did some research on my own on Understanding Automotive Gear Ratio's and I obviously understand the physics involved and so forth.  But I am a little stumped on a something you guys were just talking about.  You just finished mentioning that the Axle you picked up had a gear ratio similar to the one from your Pathy so you were pleased.  Curious.  Does the Front and Rear axles have to have the same or Very close Gear ratio's or can one be significantly different then the other.  This may be a Stupid Question to those a little more Mechanically sound then I but I really have no Idea.  And Further, I mentioned once before in a thread I posted about SAS options on the Idea of a Rockwell axle going in and someone mentioned that the Gear Ratio started at like 6:1.  If I am understanding things properly Wouldn't you want a Gear Ratio or 6:1 for Crawling?  If one could find 2 axles with a gear ratio around 6:1 would it not be advisable to use those? Is it aPower thing or a Gear thing....  *looks around*  perhaps I'm just a little Slow.

    Dowser.

The gear ratios I was refering to were for the gear box. The Holden gear box and Nissan gear box ratios are very close to each other. Thus making it a fine candidate for a transplant for my Pathy. I say "my Pahty because of the different diff ratios. With 3 different diff ratios there maybe 3 different gear box ratios too. You can have a variant in the gear boxes but it may effect your final drive and fuel economy. What you can't have a variant in is your diff ratios. They have to be the same. The Pathfinders have the following diff ratios.

    4.8xx:1

    4.6xx:1

    4.3xx:1

These can never be mixed and matched. The diff centers spin at different speeds. If your front diff is 4.8, then your rear has to be the same.

As for the 6:1 ratio, one would expect to be able to climb walls with a ratio like that. You would also want to be able to fit 46 inch wheels to your Pathy if you wanted any kind of fuel economy.

  13. why wont it fit steve?

    hitting on the tunnel?

It would be much the same reason as why you can't put a VN auto onto a VR I suppose. Different lenghts in the crank. :( That's just a guess. Bolt pattern looks a little off too.

  14. Bad news guys and girls.

The gear box I have will not fit behind my motor so the little bit of work I had planned for will not be going ahead.

The plan is to sell the box anf get a winch now. Hydraulic not electric.

  15. Since it took the mechanic 2 whole days to fix my clutch I get to pick it up when I get back to Cheney. I hope the $950 he quoted me is accurate. :contract:

I just can't wait to see what a difference a new clutch assembly makes. I think its been failing for a while now. Maybe I'm not as good a driver as I thought...

Oh well. Snows-a-comin and its time to enjoy the 4X4 again. B)

Don't worry, I'll go easy on her.

Thash it. It keeps them clean.

  16. Hey V6. Thats a picture of it, but almost all of the damage was structural (frame horns, front x-member) + bumper, radiator, etc. Thats the original hood and Q panels, they weren't touched. I'm assuming you want to see picts of the underside, etc. I'll take some today...

    B

Very good B. please post them up.

I want to see how bad it is at the front. When the Calmini SAS comes out you will need some where square and straight to weld to. On the other hand, I could source a couple of GQ radius arms for you and you could have coils instead of leafs, and not worry about the front of your Pathy at all. Just a thought.
